The Chamber was asked for a response to ongoing concerns about parking in Wey Hill. This is the statement that we gave:
‘The Chamber and its members have sympathy with commuters as they and their families spend time and money in Haslemere. They do need to park somewhere but it cannot be at the expense of local businesses.
The pressure on parking is a result of the lack of long term planning by Waverley Borough Council, as well as Network Rail, knowing that pressure on available local parking was going to grow and will continue to grow. For many years the Chamber has suggested an extra deck on the Weydown Road car park. We have also suggested that a third tier be added to the station car park.
The Chamber put plans forward to take over the running of the Wey Hill car park, as we are trying to do in the town centre with the old Coop car park. This latter facility should give local traders good low cost parking facilities for their employees.
The Chamber will continue to press the case for more clearly defined car parking facilities for the town, along with an integrated transport system to cope with the anticipated substantial increase in traffic in the years ahead.’
